HINTS ON PLANING

ROUNDING WORK • ENDS AND SQUARING • MOULDING, PLOUGH AND ROUTER PLANES • PLANING MACHINES

The usual method of holding the smoothing plane is shown at Fig. 131, and the pressure when starting and finishing the cut is applied in exactly the same manner as when using the jack plane. The smoothing plane is essentially a finishing plane, and it should be sharpened, set and used as such. Many workers, however, keep an old smoothing plane which has become worn down in the body and fairly wide at the mouth for the purpose of removing the first shaving or two off the boards. Boards received from the mill are frequently dirty and gritty, and an old plane kept for the above purpose will prevent a great amount of unnecessary wear on a good or new tool.
